Over the past 21 years, the Český Krumlov International Music Festival has become one of the Czech Republic’s (and Europe’s) most respected music festivals. One of their emerging traditions is to feature top opera stars in each year’s opening gala concert; legendary artists like Renée Fleming, José Cura and Ramón Vargas have headlined these events in recent years. This year’s opening festival gala – to take place on Friday, July 20 – will showcase Dmitri Hvorostovsky, who has been universally hailed as one of the world’s truly great baritones. He has made more than a dozen acclaimed recordings for Delos, on both CD and DVD.
The program will offer a variety of arias and songs by Bellini, Bizet, Rubinstein, Verdi and Wagner (among others) as well as overtures and orchestral plums by some of the same composers – plus Glinka, Tchaikovsky and Khachaturian. Joining Hvorostovsky for the event will be his most frequent conducting partner, the distinguished Constantine Orbelian, leading the most excellent Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra.
