Last Wednesday evening (June 19) ended a sunny spring day in Moscow, offering perfect conditions for a gala open-air concert in front of a huge crowd at Red Square. The mostly operatic program was beautifully delivered by two prolific Delos Recording artists: superstar baritone Dmitri Hovorstovsky and our cherished Maestro, Constantine Orbelian — with inspired collaboration from internationally celebrated Russian diva Anna Netrebko. Backing up this operatic “dream team” were the State Academic Symphony Orchestra “Evgeny Svetlanov” and the Academic Grand Choir “Masters of Choral Singing” – all under Constantine’s deft direction. The concert was also broadcast to millions of television viewers all over Russia!
The wide-ranging program included mostly Italian opera arias and duets by Verdi, Puccini, Giordano and Cilea – plus pieces for chorus and orchestra; the concert ended with dances, a chorus and the final scene from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin – plus some choice encores. Watch below to treat yourself to this entire knockout concert on YouTube (complete with Russian TV ads!) — and be sure to check the following list of selections from the concert that may also be found on Delos recordings, with artists as indicated:
