As we get close to 2015, we’re taking some time to look back on an exciting 2014 filled with fantastic releases! Today we turn to our August and September releases! Make sure to check back here for the rest of the recaps!
Sing, Ye Birds, A Joyous Song
Simon Carrington, conductor; Yale Schola Cantorum
In this particularly meaningful new release, renowned choral wizard Simon Carrington (now a Yale Professor Emeritus) returned in 2010 for a guest-conducting engagement with the Yale Schola Cantorum (YSC), which he founded in 2003. His program, reproduced here, was an enchanting array of music from the 20th Century and the Renaissance: the choir’s two main areas of specialty. This sterling release was recorded in concert, adding the spontaneity and fresh spirit of a live performance to Carrington’s searching interpretations and the YSC’s wondrous singing.

This program of all-American delights includes stunning selections by such living legends as Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre, as well as works from choral icon Dale Warland and the late master Norman Dello Joio. Rounding out the program are exciting creations by esteemed veteran John Muehleisen and the enticing newer voices of Joseph Gregorio, Michael Rickelton, and John Orfe, several heard in world premiere recordings. Revered choirmaster John Alexander draws exquisite performances from his singers, with sensitive and skillful support from pianist David Clemensen and trumpeter Barry Perkins in several pieces.
