The September/October issue of American Record Guide features a review for Ben Moore’s Gathering album:
“The songs are put over in fine style by a terrific group of singers. Soprano Janai Brugger has done Mahler 4 with Yannick in Philadelphia, Isabel Leonard is a Cherubino and Dorabella of note, and lyric tenor Matthew Polenzani is a regular at the Met. Joseph Lattanzi is a Silvio and Figaro (Rossini) who has become an important voice in service to contemporary operas, and baritone Michael Kelly has one of those pliable voices that can move from the Baroque Era through last Thursday and sound convincing the whole way. From the musical stage, we hear Tony-nominated Liz Calloway, and Alexander Gemignani who has celebrated Sondheim with the New York Philharmonic and was the conductor for the Broadway revival of West Side Story. All of them have their moments at center stage here, and their voices are flexible and mellifluous enough to cross the stylistic lines drawn with sophistication and taste by the composer. For my money, the loveliest song is `I Must Travel as a Phantom Now’ (Thomas Hardy) sung lusciously by Isabel Leonard. It carries the “20th Century Texts” designation, but oozes into the different realms with its integrity intact. Like the other 21 songs, it is accompanied by pianist Brian Zeger, who captures every mood and gesture of the writing. Engaging notes add even more flair to a recital that turns out to have been quite a gathering.”
