Here’s an unqualified RAVE review of Kirsten Johnson’s Foote piano album, which appeared in the December/January issue of Crescendo magazine: one of Germany’s most prestigious arts publications:
“My God! What fantastic piano music this is! And the composer is … who? Arthur Foote? Well and good – but until now, we may only have known, to a greater or lesser extent, that Foote was one of the many American late-romantics whose orchestral works one could occasionally snap up on CD here and there. And they were indeed very nice. But what we have here is truly something else: it has substance! It’s perhaps the year’s most exciting piano music discovery. Arthur Foote – as becomes apparent here – was no less than a supremely gifted composer when it came to the piano. At every turn, he produced – in strictly conservative manner – highly inspired piano music of enduring value, in the footsteps of Schumann and Brahms. Even the most narrow-minded of purists may well allow themselves to be quite beside themselves with enthusiasm over this 3-CD set, in which both interpretation and recorded sound are also absolutely impeccable. Even more: Kirsten Johnson is a complete pianist, with magnificent technique and enormous artistic personality.” —Rainer Aschemeier (translation by Lindsay Koob)
