Internationally beloved Siberian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky (“Dima” to his friends) turns 54 today. He is universally regarded as one of the world’s top handful of operatic superstars, and we at Delos are particularly proud to claim him as one of our most prolific recording artists. His nearly 20 recordings on Delos have consistently been among our most popular releases; critics and fans everywhere just can’t get enough of him.
Aside from our great pride in bringing Dima’s wondrous art to the musical public, our close association with him has been a true blessing, enabling us at Delos to appreciate and love him for his human qualities as well. If you’re an opera world insider, you no doubt already know that Dima was diagnosed last year with a malignant brain tumor. But he has not allowed his illness to get the better of him, or to stand in the way of his brilliant ongoing career. To date, treatment has kept his condition under fair control, and he has maintained a rigorous performing schedule. Through it all, his legendary vocal and interpretive qualities have remained totally undiminished: he’s sounding and performing as spectacularly as ever!
Even as you read this, Dima is halfway through a tour of Germany, presenting concerts with his longtime musical collaborator, Maestro Constantine Orbelian. In fact, he is performing today – on his birthday – in Frankfurt, supported by the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic. He’ll finish out the month with appearances in Stuttgart, Berlin and Munich – and then he’ll maintain a busy schedule through the remainder of 2016 (check out his full schedule). His devotion to his art, determination to continue performing, and courage in the face of adversity have inspired us all no end.
So please join Dima’s friends and colleagues at Delos – and his legion of fans worldwide – in wishing him an extra-special happy birthday. And please bolster your birthday wishes with your prayers and good Karma.
