Greetings from Simeon Sandiford: Delos’ Man in Trinidad & Tobago
Over the years, Delos has gained many wonderful friends and champions (not to mention remarkable recording artists) in some rather exotic corners of the world. And one of the most fascinating and loyal of said friends and champions is Simeon Sandiford, our man in the tiny Caribbean island nation of Trinidad & Tobago. He’s the owner/operator of Sanch Electronix, which turns 35 years old today – and YOU’RE INVITED to its virtual birthday party!
Perhaps I should explain at this point that Sanch Electronix is arguably T & T’s leading dealer in high-end audio equipment – and, of course, any proper vendor of such wares must also have high-end, audiophile-grade sound recordings with which to demonstrate his equipment – and perhaps send home with his happy clients. And that, dear blogophiles, is where Delos comes in: our CDs help to make his store an “island” of classical culture as well.
But that’s not all that Simeon has done for us. He’s the main architect of one of the world’s finest assortments of Steelband and other music unique to his home island’s culture – which Delos has preserved in a dozen recordings.
Aside from that, Simeon is one of the most colorful and accomplished characters you could ever hope to meet: An engineer by training, he is quite the Renaissance man, possessed of a relentlessly (and restlessly) creative spirit. He’s not only an exceptional entrepreneur, but also a writer, educator and world traveller who spares no effort as an advocate of his nation’s native culture. His Sanch Electronix Facebook page is an eminently interesting and worthwhile web destination. While you’re at it, check out the Sanch website. He is also the creator of Pete the Panstick, the animated virtual character through whom Simeon seeks to spread the gospel of T & T-style steelband music.
OH – and I promised you an invitation to Sanch Electronix’s birthday party – which just happens to fall a week after T & T’s exotic celebration of Carnival. And that means the “party spirit” is still running strong there! Here is your invitation! Finishing up, I want to share with you Simeon’s birthday newsletter – which we won’t hesitate to recommend as a different kind of “guest blog” … it’s folksy and sophisticated at the same time, not to mention downright FUNNY. Let me arouse your interest with an excerpt:
Sanch means “music” in any language
Lévé, Lévé, wake up, wake up; it’s March 13th, day of the Sanch Virtual Birthday Party. Our hostess Morena Osha apologises because ‘De Buggy Bruck’. We’ll have to walk to our rendezvous at Midnight in St. James then up the road to the Phase11 Pan Grove Panyard. We’ll bake a cake there and place sixteen musical candles on the icing. Just the way you are is the way to dress for this impromptu lime because Auntie Germaine is lending us her flying carpet, the one shaped like a Gryphon. She’s Royal.

So, hearty HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes from Delos to Sanch Electronix and our good friend Simeon. May our partnership continue to flourish for many years to come!
