Friday, July 6, longtime Delos artist David Shifrin, will join cellist Fred Sherry and pianist J.P. Redmond in a world premiere performance of Delos composer Mark Abel‘s Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano (2017) presented by Chamber Music Northwest!

My Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano is a piece of “absolute” music; the movement titles emerged spontaneously some months after the work’s completion in spring 2017.
That said, He Who Hesitates certainly symbolizes my inner struggle to complete a viable chamber composition after devoting many years to writing vocal music. Knowing Brahms’ wonderful Opus 114 since childhood was never an intimidating factor, but rather a cheerful reminder that here was a nearly unbeatable combination of instruments not exploited nearly as often as one might expect. This movement, nonetheless, was often prone to rejecting forward motion and wandering into thickets of musing – as if the instruments represented different aspects of personality losing the thread of what holds them together. Each time, someone (with a touch of annoyance on occasion) shows the way back to the path agreed upon at the outset. Unity is eventually established nine minutes in – later breaking into a confident strut. But the last measures’ slowing ostinatos signal that introversion will get the final word.… Full program notes on CMNW.org
