MARK ABEL RECEIVES TWO GLOBAL MUSIC AWARDS FOR HIS DELOS DEBUT THE DREAM GALLERY
American composer Mark Abel has won Global Music Awards’ (GMA) Award of Excellence for lyrics in his new work and Delos CD, The Dream Gallery. Abel is both the composer and lyricist for this 69-minute orchestral song cycle, which explores the psychology of present-day Californians and the varied terrain of the state they call home. Abel is also receiving GMA’s Award of Merit for creativity/originality displayed in The Dream Gallery.
Abel’s lyrics combine compassion and satirical bite in depicting what remains of the California dream, as viewed by seven archetypal characters from up and down the state. His lyrics examine a wide array of behaviors and issues – ranging from big-city swagger, elitist conceits and the struggle of immigrants to betrayal, racial scapegoating and environmental devastation. His music is equally poetic, melding the complexity and gravitas of classical composition with the in-your-face punch of rock elements.
A former rock musician-producer on the cutting-edge New York scene of the late ’70s, Abel shifted careers to become a top journalist in San Francisco. He has devoted himself to composition in recent years, releasing two previous albums featuring a wide array of his “postmodern art songs.”
