Over the past 27 years, distinguished American maestro Sir Gilbert Levine has been conducting orchestral concerts for video broadcast on American Public Television (APT). We at Delos were honored when Sir Gilbert approached us with the idea of creating a CD to match his latest video program, entitled A Celebration of Peace Through Music (DE 3487). This program includes beloved, spiritually oriented works by Copland, Verdi, Górecki, Bernstein and Brahms (see detailed program below) – thrillingly performed by the Kraków Philharmonic Choir, the Choral Arts Society of Washington and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
Having spent much of his career in Europe, Sir Gilbert has become closely associated with a number of recent Popes (especially John Paul II), and has conducted many ecumenically-spirited interfaith concerts at the Vatican and elsewhere that feature varied music of universal spiritual values, promoting reconciliation among different faiths and world peace. As a result, this Jewish musician has become known as “The Pope’s Maestro,” and has been accorded the honor of a Papal knighthood (hence the title of “Sir”). Many of his concerts have been widely broadcast by public media, both in Europe and America, in recent decades.
We just wanted you, our loyal readers, to know that this weekend – on Sunday, March 29 – the above-described concert will be broadcast over several major-metro stations. However, the majority of broadcasts will take place next week, mostly on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. This program will be the most widely-broadcast ever of a concert recording by Sir Gilbert, with over 100 APT stations nationwide participating. See the table below, with complete dates and times, to see if your local station will be broadcasting this beautifully performed and spiritually inspiring program.
OH – and watch for a promotional spot at the end of the broadcast that will offer the Delos CD (actually, a 2-CD set) – as well as the DVD (from another company) for sale; also a book by Sir Gilbert: his fascinating memoir, The Pope’s Maestro.
We at Delos are humbled, yet proud that we are able to release such an album as this at a point in time when promotion of world peace is very sorely needed. So be sure to tune in for this ecumenically spirited and often divinely inspired music. A more detailed program listing follows:
- Aaron Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man
- “Sanctus” from Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa Da Requiem
- “Bogurodzica” – Ancient Polish Marian Hymn
- Henryk Górecki: Totus Tuus
- Leonard Bernstein: Chichester Psalms
- Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 1
