A “Throwback Thursday” review of the Poldowski Project in celebration of the new Poldowski: Art Songs release!
“Poldowski was the pseudonym of Irene Wieniawski. Her compositions as performed by the exquisite combination of Zuluaga and Mok more than touched everyone in the audience. The after program chatter was filled with many ‘I had no idea…’; ‘how incredible’; ‘where did you find this?’; ‘why is this not more well known?’ … The selections of this program ranged from 1900 to 1924 set mainly to the poetry of Verlaine, but also to William Butler Yeats, Alfred Lord Tennyson, and William Blake. The pianistic quality of the accompaniments was a wonderful match for the exquisite vocal lines produced by Zuluaga. The combination of Zuluaga and Mok is the consummate ensemble showcasing individual talents, while coalescing into something greater. … Zuluaga and Mok captured without exception the musical moods and text paintings of the poetry as composed by Poldowski. One would not have to understand French to get mood, sentiment and the delightful ambience this dynamic duo presented. Mok may be slight of physical size, but she is a major powerhouse on the piano. The finesse with which she plays and accompanies Zuluaga for whom this music seems to have been composed is amazing. Zuluaga’s gorgeous voice is seamless top to bottom and definitely owns and thoroughly inhabits this music.” —Mary Clare Martin, Peninsula Reviews
