Yesterday, the New York Times proved that we aren’t the only ones excited about Sondra Radvanovsky and Dmitri Hvorostovsky in Il Trovatore performances at the Metropolitan Opera, which begin tonight (4/20/11). In case you missed Vivien Schweitzer’s candid and revealing feature on Sondra Radvanovsky, we’ll excerpt it here and share the link to the full article:
“‘I try and find deeper meanings to Leonora,’ Ms. Radvanovsky said. ‘She’s not the deepest of all characters but she does still take a journey, and I try and find aspects of that journey that are interesting.’
“This soprano’s alluringly dark-hued voice — with its distinctive timbre, expressive vibrato and gleaming top notes — was also heard to fine effect this year at the Met when she sang the title role in Puccini’s ‘Tosca,’ dazzling in the ‘Vissi d’arte’ showpiece.”
The article also mentions the Delos releases “Verdi Arias” and “Verdi Opera Scenes“:
“Her Count di Luna, who relentlessly pursues Leonora, is Dmitri Hvorostovsky, a friend and frequent collaborator with whom Ms. Radvanovsky enjoys a lively onstage camaraderie. The two recently released an impressive disc of Verdi opera scenes; Ms. Radvanovsky also recently recorded a CD of Verdi arias that illuminates her elegant phrasing and lustrous sound.”
And in an incredibly open moment, Radvanovsky talks about her nervousness in regards to the April 30, 2011 Met HD Series:
“There is an inevitable tension among singers, she said, who are conscious that a camera will be monitoring their every facial tic. ‘If you get a bad angle, they’re looking up your nostrils,’ she said. ‘We’re singers and we make funny faces, and this is broadcast around the world. I think a lot of my colleagues have done various things to make themselves look better on camera.'”
