Amy Stumpfl previews ALIAS Chamber Ensemble and Portara Ensemble’s new release, Amorisms: Music of Paul Moravec for The Tennessean:
“Over the past 13 years, ALIAS Chamber Ensemble has established an impressive reputation, not only for artistic excellence, but also for its commitment to new works. But with its new album “Amorisms,” this innovative organization proves that the power of collaboration is alive and well in Music City. The project actually started out in 2014 with three prominent Nashville arts organizations — the Grammy-nominated ALIAS, Portara Ensemble and Nashville Ballet — teaming up to commission a new work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec. The result is “Amorisms,” a powerful piece for strings, clarinet and vocal ensemble, featuring various lines and phrases about love from the works of William Shakespeare. Moravec also created a new arrangement of one of his earlier works, “Sacred Love Songs,” specifically for ALIAS and Portara. The two organizations presented the world premiere in May 2014, as part of ALIAS’ Spring Concert at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. Meanwhile, Nashville Ballet choreographed “Amorisms” and other works by Moravec (including “Tempest Fantasy,” for which he won the 2004 Pulitzer), as part of its popular Emergence dance series.” —Amy Stumpfl, The Tennessean
