We were saddened to learn from Constantine Orbelian, Delos’ own resident Maestro (also Artists and Repertoire Director), that his beloved “Uncle Konstantin,” composer Konstantin Orbelian (b. July 29, 1928), passed away yesterday. Not only was he one of the leading serious Russian composers of Armenian descent, but also one of his nation’s finest jazz musicians and songwriters. His conspicuous prominence on the Russian musical scene lasted from the post-WWII years through the end of the Soviet era and beyond; persisting even after he emigrated to America and made his home in Los Angeles. You can trace his singular impact upon his nation’s musical culture HERE.
Delos is pleased to have recorded one of his best-known songs, “The Whisper of Birches,” as performed by distinguished baritone (and Delos recording artist) Dmitri Hvorostovsky, with Konstantin’s illustrious nephew Constantine conducting the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. We’re proud to offer it here, in tribute to this exceptional musician.

Please join us in extending heartfelt condolences to Constantine and his mother Vera (Uncle Konstantin’s sister-in-law) in this time of bereavement.
