RecordNet.com has an incredible profile of the “dynamic, dramatic and expressive” Delos artist Gabriela Martinez from before her appearance with the Stockton Symphony:
“I just remember the energy and joy with which she plays,” Stockton Symphony conductor Peter Jaffe said. “She’s really captivating. She’s in complete command. People really went nuts over her.” … “She really took the audience’s heart,” Jaffe, 60, said of Martinez’s first Stockton concert on Oct. 26, 2013. “She has a kaleidoscope of style and emotion. She’s the centerpiece.” …
Martinez started in that spot, performing her first public concerto solo when she was “nearly 7,” developing her skills in Caracas, Venezuela. At 11, her family moved to New York City so she could attend the Juilliard School’s Pre-College.
She returned to New York in 2014, recording “Amplified Soul” at Purchase College, State University of New York Dec. 2-4. The five-track, 54:50-minute CD was released on Nov. 11, 2016. The title track was written for her by Dan Visconti, 34, a composer from Chicago.”
“It was so exciting,” Martinez said of her first recording experience. “It’s such an exciting. I loved it. I had an amazing producer (David Frost, 67, a four-time Grammy Award winner from Victoria, British Columbia). The selections are “all special. I’m really passionate about them and sharing them. They all have special meaning in their own way. “They have especially spoken to me and shaped me as a musician. … I didn’t know what to expect. It was pretty interesting playing in a huge auditorium that was completely empty. There’s something magical about that. There’s something about that concert hall that’s very unique.”…
“She’s just a phenomenon,” Jaffe said. “I won’t be a bit surprised if the whole audience leaps to its feet. She’s just a star.”
