Opera News names Lawrence Brownlee’s Allegro io son a “Critic’s Choice” recording:
“Lawrence Brownlee has good reason to be happy, with a flourishing career as one of the most gifted bel canto tenors of his generation. The sheer beauty of his voice would be enough to please any listener, but his technical finesse, attention to the shape of every phrase and emotional honesty make this collection of Donizetti and Bellini arias a must-have. … His “Una furtiva lagrima” combines yearning, melancholy and hopefulness. Anyone who has witnessed Brownlee’s delightful Tonio in La Fille du Régiment onstage knows he has those nine high Cs in “Ah! mes amis” well in hand, no recording trickery required. He’s in as fine form here as ever, and the whole aria flows with joyful, ringing tone. Almost more impressive is “Pour me rapprocher de Marie,” which brims with melting lyricism. The Kaunas City Symphony plays gracefully under the sensitive leadership of Constantine Orbelian.” —Joanne Sydney Lessner, Opera News
