Horizons: A Musical Journey

Horizons – A Musical Journey is a program whose theme is primarily reflective and spiritual in nature. Such thoughtful music as Hovhaness’ “Prayer of St. Gregory” and the “Tui Nati vulnerati” from Dvorak’s “Stabat Mater” is sprinkled with the occasional lighter works such as the “Scherzo” from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, “Winter Dreams,” and the delightful opening movement of Dvorak’s Wind Serenade. This musically satisfying journey, much of it through musical territory not often heard, affords the listener a survey of some outstanding recent Delos recordings. Included are also three sentimental looks back to past hit releases: tracks from the all-time favorite Hanson Symphony No. 3, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet’s “Dances from Renaissance to Nutcracker,” and Carol Rosenberger’s “Perchance to Dream.” Beginning the program is a special preview track of the “Sanctus” from Durufle’s “Requiem,” performed by Dennis Keene’s Voices of Ascension. The complete Durufle recording is scheduled for release in Fall, 1995. We hope that this beautiful program will be of interest to listeners familiar with the Delos catalog as well as those new to classical music.
