GUSTAV MAHLER: Symphony No. 10

the Carpenter completion

Andrew Litton, conductor
Dallas Symphony Orchestra
“Most conductors who elect to perform a complete Mahler Tenth opt for the Cooke edition. Carpenter called his version ‘a completion.’ I liked the honesty of that. What appealed to me about Carpenter’s approach is that he took real life musical scenarios, situations that Mahler resolved in certain ways elsewhere, and incorporated the same approach into this symphony.” Andrew Litton
Delos, Maestro Andrew Litton and his Dallas Symphony join together in this important installment of their joint Mahler recordings. Left incomplete after Mahler’s death, the Tenth Symphony has been the subject of much controversy. Clinton A. Carpenter was one of the first musicologists to undertake the difficult task of ‘continuing’ this emotional and powerfully evocative work. This much anticipated recording combines the exceptional artistry of Maestro Litton and his orchestra with the sonic superiority the listener has come to expect from Delos.
