“This album brings together some favorite, often-requested MCO repertoire that we perform with our core group on tour. Most of the music in this program features one or more of our players as soloists.” – Constantine Orbelian

This special salute recording is as much a Greatest Hits disc as a showcase for six splendid musicians chosen from the ranks of an orchestra in which every member is a potential soloist. The recording includes BOCCHERINI’s Symphony Op. 12, G. 506 in D Minor (‘La Casa del Diavolo’), a chance for the entire orchestra to demonstrate its polish and finesse. As the New York Times commented, ‘the fiery last movement conjures up the ‘Devil’s House’ of the symphony’s subtitle and paved the way for three arias from Mozart’s Don Giovanni.’ This is followed by SARASATE’s famous violin display piece Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs), Op. 20, an Everest in any aspiring violinist’s repertoire, all yearning pathos and fervent passion. TCHAIKOVSKY’s Pezzo Capriccioso, Op. 62 gives the cello soloist ample opportunity to revel in lush Russian melody and brilliant passage work. The VIVALDI Concerto for Four Violins and Cello in B Minor, Op. 3, No. 10 (RV 580) features four violinists and the principal cellist of the orchestra in a scintillating pointillistic rendition of the Italian master’s work. The CD concludes with a J. S. BACH gem, the reconstructed Concerto for Oboe and Violin, BWV 1060, highlighting two more artists from the seemingly endless reservoir of talent in the MCO.
