German Magazine CD-Rezension reviews Sasha Rohzdestvensky & Josiane Marfurt’s release Tchaikovsky: Complete Works for Violin & Piano (translated from German by Lindsay Koob):
“Is Tchaikovsky’s Tatiana* singing here of her overwhelming love? The voluptuously melancholic melodrama of his operas also permeates his works for violin and piano, and is fully realized by this Russian-Swiss duo. This is clearly conveyed by Rozhdestvensky’s violin tone, which – typical of the virtuoso Russian school – radiates emotional intensity and tender tears, thanks to his soulful vibrato and bewitching overtones. His lively, dancelike scherzo movements are manically electrifying. The CD’s music is best known in its orchestral versions, but its rediscovery as intimate chamber music is rewarding – thanks largely to (pianist) Josiane Marfurt’s lyrical sensitivity.” — Peter Krause (translated by Lindsay Koob)
