By the time you read this, distinguished Conductor/Pianist Constantine Orbelian will be the latest recipient of the Russian Order of Friendship (ROF) medal; it was presented this afternoon at the Russian Consulate in San Francisco. The medal was in recognition of Orbelian’s long-standing activities in the forefront of Russian musical culture since 1991, when he assumed directorship of the celebrated Moscow Chamber Orchestra. With them, over more than two decades, he has toured throughout the Russian Federation, appeared in widely viewed nationwide TV broadcasts, and made dozens of acclaimed recordings for Delos.
The ROF, instituted in 1994, is the highest Russian award bestowed upon foreign nationals “… whose work, deeds and efforts were aimed at the betterment of relations with the Russian Federation and its people” (Wikipedia). This certainly fits for someone about whom Fanfare magazine said “Constantine Orbelian stands astride two great societies, and finds and promotes synergistic harmony from the best of each.” Past recipients include distinguished statesmen, scholars, and artists of all kinds. Famous musicians who have received the award include pianist Van Cliburn and conductor Ricardo Muti. This is a truly big day – not only for Maestro Orbelian, but for his orchestra, Delos, and the two great nations which his work has helped to bring closer together. Come back to the Delos Insider or Facebook on Monday for a detailed full report!
