“Nothing is better than music… and when the enchantment has ceased, we are still bathed in its clarity… and the certitude of finding something again, that which lives forever in music” —Nadia Boulanger
Dear friends,
News flash! The legendary Nadia Boulanger, known primarily as mentor to some of the most famous 20th century composers, wrote some wonderful music in her younger years! This unique 2-CD set of unknown and seldom-heard compositions written by “Mademoiselle,” as everyone called her, began with a suggestion from pianist Lucy Mauro, and struck a resonant chord with me for a number of reasons. I am thrilled that Delos can help to bring Mademoiselle’s own music to light, at long last.
Lucy, who obtained grants to support this project, along with soprano Nicole Cabell and her fellow artists who participated in the recording, are all highly enthusiastic about this music. Especially exciting are the 26 wonderful songs, 13 of which are heard here in world premiere recordings.
I first met Mademoiselle in 1955, as her student at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France. She stood by my side when I was stricken with paralytic polio that same summer, and helped me through the first part of my long journey back to piano playing. Our Delos founder Amelia Haygood (1919-2007) loved the stores about Mademoiselle, and would have been excited and honored, as I am, to be releasing this special world premiere collection of Mademoiselle’s deeply affecting compositions.
Yours sincerely,
Carol Rosenberger
Pianist, and Delos Director
