American Record Guide reviews Angelique Zuluaga and Gwendolyn Mok’s Poldowski: Art Songs recording:
“Delos serves up an exquisite selection, including several world premieres. Poldowski’s word settings are sensitive, the vocal writing centered very much in the middle of the voice. She rarely asks the singer to sing particularly high or low. One gets the impression that she wanted her songs to be singable by professionals and amateurs. Her accompaniments are magical, supporting the text but also suggesting haunting depths only hinted at in the poems themselves. … Angelique Zuluaga’s shimmering soprano meets all of the challenges here, including the Debussy. It is the perfect voice for this type of song recital: attractive, alert, and intimate. Her French is very good as well. Gwendolyn Mok’s transparent pianism caused me to replay several of the songs just to hear her contributions again. The Alexander String Quartet and oboist Ryan Zwahlen make lovely contributions. Once again Delos is to be commended for not only producing a disc of fine music by an unjustly neglected composer, but also excellent notes, texts, and translations.”
